The Living Desert Zoo is located off Highway 111 and Portola Avenue in Palm Desert. This is a moderate-sized zoo and gardens featuring desert dwelling plants and wild animals from around the world. Zoo animals list includes mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and more. See mountain lion, leopard, giraffe, warthog, tortoise, birds and more. A reptile exhibit displays many of the local venomous rattlesnakes and scorpions. A nursery within the gardens offers a large variety of succulent, cacti and drought tolerant plants for sale. Village WaTuTu is an authentic looking African village with eateries, souvenir shops, picnic areas and restrooms nestled between displays of camel, leopard, giraffe and a petting zoo of farm animals. A short half-mile wilderness trail loops into the local mountains to a picnic area. Overnight safari camp is available for the more daring.
