Gold Country Whitewater Rafting

Gold Country Whitewater Rafting Overview

Gold Country

California Gold Country has several whitewater rafting rivers and plenty of professional guide services to make your experience memorable. From the class IV+ of the Yuba or Stanislaus Rivers, to the popular class II American River that traverses this historic region, California has a river rafting tour for any skill level. Navigate glacial-carved granite canyons or high sierra passages and it all depends on which waterway you choose. Some portions of the region can even be navigated by canoe.

Gold Country

White water rafting on the Yuba is fantastic in spring for the more experienced river runner. This whitewater rafting tour has no crowds and plenty of camping options. The Yuba passes through the historic town of Downieville. Downieville offers accommodations, shops and saloons. Stop at The Lure Resort situated alongside the Yuba that caters to fly fishermen.

Trang & freinds on the Middle Fork American

The American is California's most popular river for whitewater rafting. All three forks of the American begin near Lake Tahoe and unite to fill Folsom Lake.

  • North Fork American river rafting is for the more experienced and starts out in a gorge with plenty of boulders to dodge. These class 4 whitewater rapids eventually mellow to a relaxing class 2.

  • South Fork American whitewater rafting offers class 2 and 3 whitewater rapids that are fun for both beginners and the experienced alike. Some sections can be even be navigated by canoe. Stop off at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park where James Marshall first discovered gold which started the Gold Rush. Try your hand at gold panning.

  • Middle Fork American river rafting offers more class 4 action.

White water rafting on the Stanislaus depends heavily on a good winter snow pack in order to be navigable. The New Melones Dam has limited whitewater rafting in the upper portion of the river. Goodwin Canyon, below the dam, is the more consistent portion but offers difficult class 4+ whitewater rapids.
