North Coast National Parks

North Coast National Parks Overview

North Coast

Redwood National Park is the only one found along the California North Coast. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses Grant signed into existence the world's first national park. Since then, hundreds more have been established. These parks are awe inspiring natural wonders and offer endless activities. California has several of these National Parks and Monuments. Look for the tallest tree in the world, walk through the Ewok forest of Endor from Return of the Jedi, hike through a fern canyon and relax by a campfire on a redwoods camping trip.

TIP: The National Park Service offers FEE FREE DAYS to some parks on select weekends through the Summer. Use this link to view available dates.

Redwood National Park is located along Highway 101 north of Eureka. Redwood National Park and State Parks are home to some of the world's tallest and oldest Redwood trees. These old-growth Redwood trees can live to be 2000 years old and grow to over 300 feet tall. Bright red tree trunks against the lush, fern canopy make strikingly beautiful contrasts. Redwood contains 3 state Redwood parks including Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast State Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. Much of Redwood ends at the ocean with steep, rocky cliffs meeting redwood forests. Some areas level out to form lagoons and estuaries. Activities include redwoods camping, hiking, backpacking, fishing, biking, horseback riding, river rafting, and more. Hollywood has used Redwood National Park as a film set for epic movies like Return of the Jedi, E.T. and Jurassic Park.
