Long Beach has a plethora of attractions and things to do that attract locals and tourists alike. Whether it be a romantic gondola ride through the canals of Naples, sipping a cocktail at an oceanfront restaurant, window shopping at Belmont Shore, or a family adventure to the Long Beach Aquarium and The Queen Mary, Long Beach has something for everyone. Many attractions are within easy walking distance of each other including The Queen Mary, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, The Pike, Shoreline Village and Convention Center. Other exciting destinations are easily reached by water taxi, which is an adventure in itself. Every year, the Long Beach Grand Prix takes over the streets of downtown making it the 'Monaco of California'.

Attractions

The Queen Mary

The Queen Mary is an early 1900's luxury cruise liner that's situated across Long Beach Harbor from Shoreline Village, The Pike, Aquarium of the Pacific and Convention Center. She made her maiden voyage in 1936. The city purchased the the Queen Mary in 1967 and has since maintained it as a floating hotel with restaurants, tours and events. The Queen Mary resembles the Titanic and is a popular attraction. Several tour options are available. The Queen Mary 4th of July event offers the biggest fireworks show around. Queen Mary Dark Harbor is a popular Halloween event where they turn a portion of the ship into a Ghost Ship. Aquarium of the Pacific

Aquarium of the Pacific is situated in Long Beach Harbor near Shoreline Village, The Pike, Long Beach Convention Center and Queen Mary. This large-scale aquarium showcases fish and ocean animals from around the world. Shark Lagoon is the only petting pool that allows visitors to touch 5-foot long sharks. Shoreline Village is situated in Long Beach Harbor near The Pike, Aquarium of the Pacific, Convention Center and Queen Mary. Shoreline Village resembles a New England fishing village and contains several restaurants, bars, boutique shops, touristy & quirky shops. Many water tours, boat charters and boat rentals are available at Shoreline Village. Parkers Lighthouse is a seafood restaurant with terrific views of The Queen Mary and harbor. The Pike, Long Beach

The Pike is situated near Shoreline Village, the Long Beach Aquarium and Convention Center. The Pike features an outdoor shopping mall, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, historic carousel, ferris wheel and more. A few of the restaurants include P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Gladstones, California Pizza Kitchen, Outback Steakhouse and many more. Long Beach Museum of Art

Battleship Iowa

U.S.S. Iowa is a naval battleship that served in WWII and the Korean War. At over 887 feet in length and with steel over a foot thick, the U.S.S. Catalina Island is only 20-miles offshore and is accessible by boat or helicopter from Long Beach. The Island Express helicopter pad is near the Queen Mary and Cruise Terminal dome. Catalina Express departs from Catalina Landing, a short distance west of Shoreline Village in Rainbow Harbor. Catalina has a multitude of activities including diving, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, camping, sightseeing and more. Long Beach Arena

Long Beach Entertainment Center is located adjacent to Shoreline Village, The Pike and Convention Center. The 13,500 seat Long Beach Arena hosts world-class concerts, ice hockey and other events. It features a massive 'Planet Ocean' under-sea mural. The whale mural wraps the entire exterior of the arena and was painted by Wyland, a world-renowned conservationist. Beaches

Alamitos Beach from Bluff Park

Alamitos Beach features a wide sandy beach that stretches from Shoreline Drive to the Belmont Pier. A paved bike path runs the entire length and is used by walkers, joggers and roller bladders. Bikes and in-line skates can be rented along the trail near Shoreline Drive. Sunbathing, swimming, kite flying and kite surfing are other popular activities. Parking lots are available off Shoreline Drive and the end of Junipero Avenue, which is also referred to as Junipero Beach. Restrooms available.

Belmont Shore includes the Belmont Pier and a wide sandy beach that continues south and tapers to the Alamitos jetty. At the pier is the Belmont Plaza Pool, an indoor public pool, beachfront café, bait shop/snack stand and deep-sea fishing charters. Just south of the pier at the end of Granada Avenue is Granada Beach where Alfredo's Beach Club hosts events like Movies on the Beach, Tiki Beach Festival, The Great Sand Sculpture Contest and more. Farther down Ocean Boulevard you will find the Leeway Sailing Center where sailboats and paddleboards can be rented. Behind the Leeway Sailing Center are the gondola rentals for romantic cruises through Naples Island canals. Several parking lots are available off of Ocean Boulevard. Restrooms available.

Peninsula Beach is located off Ocean Boulevard. Peninsula features two small sandy beaches along the inner waters of Alamitos Bay. Bayshore Walk is a cement walking path that separates the beach from homes. Peninsula Beach connects with Bay Shore Beach as it wraps the inner bay from the peninsula to the 2nd Street bridge. Park in the streets of the residential neighborhood. No facilities.

Bay Shore Beach

Bay Shore Beach is accessible from either 2nd Street or Ocean Boulevard along Bay Shore Avenue. Bay Shore features a long sandy beach that wraps along the inner waters of Alamitos Bay. Sailboats and paddleboards can be rented at the Leeway Sailing Center. Behind the Leeway Sailing Center are the gondola rentals for romantic cruises through Naples Island canals. Kayaks on the Water is next to Leeway and offers kayak rentals for navigating the bay. Park in the streets of the residential neighborhood. Restrooms available.

Mothers Beach is located on the north side of 2nd Street along Appian Way. Mothers Beach is a small sandy beach situated in the protected waters of Alamitos Bay. Mothers Beach features a grass picnic area, restrooms and kayak rentals during warmer months. Parking lot available on Appian Way off 2nd Street.

Marine Stadium is located on the north side of 2nd Street along Appian Way. Marine Stadium Beach features a thin strip of beach situated in the protected waters of Alamitos Bay. Marine Stadium hosts boating events year-round like speed boats, outrigger canoe races and more. Parking lot, restrooms and boat launch available.

Shopping

Shoreline Village

Find a bunch of fantastic, quirky shops that are fun to visit even if you're not looking to buy. The Pirate's Cove sells products that have anything to do with pirates. Hot Licks is a hot sauce shop that will astound you with how many versions of hot sauces are out there. The Purple House carries anything that is purple whether that be candles, clothing or souvenirs. Other shops include jewelry, womens clothing, hats and more.

Also referred to as 2nd Street, Belmont Shore features a plethora of shopping, dining and entertainment options. Along with larger chains such as Banana Republic and White House/Black Market, Belmont Shore also has a multitude of mom-n-pop shops like Romance Etc., Aroma di Roma, Bayshore Boutique and so many more. Enjoy fourteen city blocks of boutique shops and people watching.

Marina Pacifica Mall is located in south Long Beach on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH), just north of 2nd Street. This is a larger mall complex situated next to Alamitos Bay. Transit & Traffic

The 710 freeway connects downtown Long Beach to Los Angeles. The 710 freeway ends at the Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, Aquarium of the Pacific, Convention Center, Long Beach Arena, The Pike, Pine Avenue and more. The 710 freeway has heavy traffic with container trucks from the Port of Long Beach. These trucks also keep the freeway in poor condition. Expect heavier traffic during the rush hour times of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm weekdays.


The 605 freeway connects southern portions of Long Beach with East Los Angeles. The 605 freeway provides convenient access to Belmont Shore, Naples Island, Alamitos Bay and more. Take the 7th Street/Long Beach exit from the 605 freeway. Expect heavier traffic during the rush hour times of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm weekdays.


The 405 freeway passes through north Long Beach and connects all of northern and southern California. Take the 710 freeway south from the 405 to downtown Long Beach. The Long Beach Airport is easily accessible off the 405 freeway from the Lakewood Boulevard exit. Expect heavier traffic during the rush hour times of 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm weekdays.


Long Beach Transit is great throughout the city. All of the popular tourist areas are linked by bus or water taxi.

  • Passport Red Line (A) bus hugs the coast from Catalina Landing at the north end of Long Beach all the way to the southern end at Alamitos Bay Landing. Bus fare is free when traveling in the area of downtown, The Pike, Shoreline Village, Aquarium of the Pacific and the Queen Mary.
  • AquaLink Ferry Boat AquaLink Water Taxi is a colorful 60-foot catamaran ferry boat that carries passengers between the inner harbor destinations of The Queen Mary and Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific to the outer harbor Belmont Pier and Alamitos Bay Landing for only $5 dollars.
  • AquaBus Ferry Boat AquaBus Water Taxi is a large red ferry boat that carries passengers to the harbor locations of The Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific, Shoreline Village, Pine Avenue and Hotel Maya for only $1 dollar. Only runs during summer months, May to Sept.
  • MTA Blue Line connects downtown Long Beach with downtown Los Angeles.

CAUTION: Long Beach has areas with high crime. Visitors using Long Beach Transit are relatively safe along the entire shoreline but the inland regions of the city to the north are not recommended. If you're unfamiliar with the area, we recommend you avoid using public transit in the entire region north of 4th Street and west of Redondo Avenue.

Winter Average lows in the 50's and highs in the upper 60's. Mostly rain and rare hail storms occur.


Spring Average lows in the 60's and highs in the mid-70's. Rain showers can occur through May.


Summer Average lows in the 70's and highs in the mid to upper 80's. Humidity can make those temperatures seem higher. Once or twice a year, Santa Ana winds blow in from the desert reducing humidity and increasing the heat to the high 90's+. Summer brush fires are a regular occurrence. Marine layer is a common occurrence and blankets the region with clouds, but often burns off by midday.


Fall Average lows in the low 60's and highs in the 70's. Mostly rain and rare hail storms occur.
