Sierra Nevada Kayaking

Sierra Nevada Kayaking Overview

High Sierra

Sierra Nevada kayak rentals, canoe rentals and (SUP) stand-up paddleboard rentals are available at many local lakes in the region. Many rental shops also offer tours and lessons to learn how to kayak. We've found the perfect places to kayak in the Sierra Nevada. These water sports are easy, fun and require little experience, making them the perfect summertime activity. From the massive Lake Tahoe to the secluded Alpine lakes outside of Bishop we've found the perfect places to paddleboard (SUP), canoe and kayak. Rent a paddleboard and cruise the Mediterranean-blue waters of Tahoe. Paddle along the shores of Convict Lake, one of California's most beautiful locations.

Lee Vining

Mono Lake

Mono Lake is located north of Lee Vining off Highway 395. This large but shallow body of water is one of the oldest lakes in North America. Mono tufas are mineral deposits that protrude above the surface. The water is 2½ times saltier than the ocean, which results in additional buoyancy when swimming. You don't want to get it in your eyes or cuts. Alkali flies sometimes cover the shoreline but stay near the surface and are not really a nuisance. Activities include hiking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and cross-country skiing. Amenities include a Visitor Center. No boat rentals are available. Canoe and kayak launch is available at Navy Beach. A launch ramp is available near Lee Vining Creek for larger boats but there are restrictions. Rentals and car carriers are available from Caldera Kayaks in Mammoth Lakes. Fish species are non-existent due to the high salinity.
