Sierra Nevada Camping

Sierra Nevada Camping Overview

High Sierras

Campgrounds in the Sierra Nevada number in the hundreds. Find Sierra Nevada camping from Lake Tahoe to Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park with conveniences like flush toilets and showers, as well as popular and unique campgrounds to help you narrow the choice. These include National Parks, State Parks, National Forests, State Forests, County Parks and privately owned camping resorts. Camping in the High Sierras varies from secluded high Alpine lakes to Yosemite National Park and the Giant Sequoia groves of Sequoia-Kings Canyon. Sierra Nevada campgrounds of notable interest include a campground by the lake in Lake Tahoe, Sentinel Campground in Kings Canyon where some of the largest Sequoia trees in the world are found, Grover Hot Springs State Park with its huge spring-fed pool and lake camping in Mammoth Lakes. We've included as much detail as possible so you have a better idea of what to expect and whether camping reservations are required in advance.

BEARS: Metal bear-proof lockers are provided in almost all campsites where bears are a problem. California bears rarely attack people without provocation and should not be feared, but a great deal of space and respect should be given to a bear. Please visit our Tips page for more information on bears and other precautions to consider.

PETS: Dogs are allowed at almost all campgrounds but must be kept on a leash, picked up after, and never left unattended. Most beach camping allows dogs in the campground but not on the beach.

Yosemite is a playground to nature-lovers with activities like hiking, horseback riding, camping, fishing, skiing, ice-skating, swimming, whitewater rafting and so much more. Please visit our Yosemite page for more to see and do in the park. Reservations: 800-436-7275 (301-722-1257 outside the United States) or 888-530-9796 for TDD users. You can also visit recreation.gov. Public showers are located in Half Dome Village and Housekeeping Camp. Half Dome Village showers are available for all guests staying in the village and all Pines campgrounds. Other camps must use the showers at Housekeeping Camp. Public laundry facilities are located in Housekeeping Camp. Groceries and supplies can be purchased in Tuolumne Meadows, Crane Flat, Yosemite Village, Half Dome Village and Wawona. Bear Lockers for storing food are provided in all campgrounds in Yosemite as well as at many popular trailheads. Most bear lockers measure 45x18x33, but some campgrounds offer slightly smaller or larger versions. We were able to fit a large cooler, small gas barbecue and six bags of groceries with ease. Backpackers must obtain free wilderness permits for overnight stay in Yosemite's wilderness. These can be found at any of Yosemite's wilderness centers. Bear canisters can be rented from the Valley Bookstore, Wawona Store or Hetch Hetchy entrance station. Below we've provided information on most all of the campgrounds in Yosemite National Park.
