Whale Watching San Francisco

Whale Watching San Francisco Overview

Whales are protected along California's coast and therefore, have been increasing in numbers over the years. Even sightings of the, once almost extinct, Blue Whale are thankfully increasing and Killer Whale (Orca Whale) pods have been spotted from Eureka to Monterey and LA. Other whale sightings include the Gray Whale, Humpback Whale, Minke Whale, Fin Whale and Baird's Beaked Whale. With so many species now thriving off our coast, the once seasonal activity of whale watching is now possible year round. Migrating whales pass by our coast twice a year on their way between the cool waters of Alaska to the warm waters of Bala California. Fishing charters have been quick to accommodate a booming interest in whale watching as well as some enterprising boat owners. Today, nearly every major marina, port or harbor along the California coast offers some sort of whale watching option from up close kayak tours to a whale watching cruise in a luxury yacht. Migrating whales such as the Humpback Whale and Gray Whale are the most commonly seen and pass by San Francisco twice a year between December and May. Killer Whales that feed on their calves are most common March through May but can be spotted year round. Blue Whales are the largest at nearly 100 feet in length and frequent San Francisco waters during the summer months. Additional marine life you may encounter include dolphins, porpoises, sea otters, seals, sealions, sun fish, sharks and leatherback sea turtles. Listed below are whale watching charters from Sausalito to Pillar Point Harbor in Half Moon Bay.
