Julian is located east on highway 78 approximately 50 miles from Escondido. Julian is well known for its homemade apple pies. Nestled in the pine and oak trees in the low altitude mountains between San Diego and the desert, Julian is a trip back in time. Horse-drawn carriages carry visitors around town. Vintage bed & breakfasts replace chain hotels. Small town hospitality greets every visitor. One of the cool historic sites is the two-cell Julian jail built in 1914. Enjoy wine tasting at one of several wineries in the Julian region, or take a tour of an actual gold mine at the Eagle High Peak Mine. Activities include shopping, eating apple pie, and sightseeing. The nearby Lake Cuyamaca offers boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking.
NOTE: If you visit and enjoy Julian, please consider making a donation to the families of the fallen and injured firefighters that helped save this town in 2003. Four heroic firefighters, brought in to assist from the Northern California town of Novato, stood their ground to save Julian as if it was their own backyard. Steve Rucker was overtaken by the flames, Doug McDonald was burned severely and Shawn Kreps and Barret Smith suffered minor injuries. These men are true American heroes. Contact the Bank of Marin regarding the Steven Rucker and Doug McDonald Funds at (415) 899-7338.
