Shasta Cascade National Parks Overview

Shasta Cascade

On March 1 1872, President Ulysses Grant signed into existence the world's first national park. Since then, hundreds more have been established. These parks are awe inspiring natural wonders and offer glipses into our history. California has several of these National Parks and Monuments. Lassen Volcanic, Lava Beds and Whiskey-Shasta-Trinity are three National Parks, Monuments and Recreation Areas found in California's Shasta Cascade region.

TIP:The National Park Service offers FEE FREE DAYS to some National Parks on select weekends through the Summer. Use this link to view available dates.

Lassen Volcanic is located off highway 89 between highways 36 and 44 east of Redding. Lassen is an active volcano with its last major eruption occurring in 1914. Two of Lassen's main attractions are the boiling mud pots of Bumpass Hell and Sulphur Works. Activities include camping, fishing, hiking, cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Roads are often closed in the winter. We highly recommend heading a little further north to see Burney Falls.

Lava Beds National Monument is located off highway 139 in the northernmost portion of the state. Ancient volcanic lava flows cover the entire area. The main attraction to this park is the hollow lava tubes that form caves throughout the region. These tubes are more like tunnels that hikers and cavers can explore. In 1872 and out numbered 10 to 1, local indians used the tunnels to defend against the U.S. Army. Indian petroglyphs dating back to 6000 years ago fill a wall in the park. Camping, hiking and caving are the most popular activities in the park.

Whiskey-Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area is a region surrounding highway 299 and interstate 5 outside of Redding. This area contains 3 of California's most beautiful lakes; Shasta, Whiskeytown and Clair Engle. Activities include camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, boating and houseboating and caving on Lake Shasta. Shasta Caverns are caves accessible by ferry from the north side of the lake. For more details see our Caves page. The largest trout I've ever caught was on Lake Shasta. The lake is home to bass, several varieties of wild trout, several varieties of salmon and monster sturgeon. To give you an idea of how big sturgeon get, Fish and Game regulations state you can only keep them from 6 to 9 feet. And that's not a typo...it's feet. Houseboats can be rented from many of the harbors and require many months advance reservation. See our Houseboating page for more details.
