Desert Recreational Lakes Overview
Listed below are some of the few recreational lakes that can be found in the desert region of California. Most offer boating, fishing, swimming or other activities. Some of these lakes offer boat rentals that can include fishing boats, kayaks, canoes, ski boats, jet-skiis, paddle boards, pontoon boats and pedal boats. Some have boat launch ramps and marinas that provide fuel, food & drink, cafes, fishing tackle and camping supplies. Several offer camping on the lake with some even having boat-in campgrounds. Among those to choose from are the massive Lake Havasu situated on the California, Arizona border and offering hundreds of miles of shorline, or the smaller Diaz and Cahuilla Lakes out of Lone Pine and La Quinta respectively. Diaz Lake - Lone Pine is located off Interstate 395 south of Lone Pine. Situated at the base of the Eastern Sierras, Diaz Lake is a small, 1-mile long lake offering activities like boating, fishing, water-skiing and swimming. Amenities include campgrounds.

Lake Havasu - Havasu City is located on the California border with Arizona between Highways 40 and 62. Houseboating, speed boating, water skiing, fishing, sunbathing and people watching are the main attractions. Lake Havasu is approximately 30 miles in length and supports sunfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, striped bass, crappie, channel catfish, flathead catfish and carp fish species. This is a very popular destination for college students and partiers during the spring and summer breaks. This is a great place to water ski or learn to if you've never done it before.

Lake Cahuilla - La Quinta is located south of La Quinta off Interstate 10, from the Jefferson Street Exit. Situated southeast of Palm Springs at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, Lake Cahuilla is a small, 1-mile long lake offering activities like fishing, hiking and horseback riding. Amenities include campgrounds, a swimming pool, playground and picnic facilities. Fish species include catfish, striped bass, largemouth bass, carp and panfish.

Salton Sea - Salton Sea is located south of Coachella off Interstate 10. This is a huge, 40-mile long and 20-mile wide lake that formed as the result of a dam breakage in 1905. Activities include boating, kayaking, swimming, water skiing, fishing and wildlife viewing. Boat performance is increased due to its 228 feet below sea level elevation. As the name suggests, the Salton Sea has a high salt content which limits the fish species found there to tilapia. Amenities include campgrounds and picnic areas.
