U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison once stayed at the hotel along with many other recognizable characters like Mark Twain, Jim Corbett, Lotta Crabtree and more. The hotel features an elegant dining room, historic bar and antique elevator that is still operational. Coloma Resort - Coloma is located directly across the river from Marshall's Gold Discovery State Park in Coloma. This is the site that sparked the 1849 gold rush when James Marshall found some flakes of gold in the river. This is one of the best places to stay in Gold Country if you have kids. Murphys Historic Hotel - Murphys is located off Highway 4 just a short distance northeast of Angels Camp and Highway 49. They offer 9 guest rooms in their Landmark two-story hotel. The hotel and guestrooms are decorated in period antiques and were once by notable figures like Mark Twain, Black Bart and Ulysses S. Grant. The upstairs rooms are kept authentic and do not have telephones, televisions, alarm clocks or coffee makers. Central bathrooms are located in the hall. A popular restaurant and authentic bar are situated in the lower portion of the hotel. Ask the bartender to show you the bullet holes from the Wild West era. The Hotel is situated at the end of Main Street where you'll find a plethora of wine boutiques, shops and restaurants in one of our favorite Gold Country towns.

TIP: The hotel offers an additional 20 rooms in an adjacent motel separate of the historic hotel. We recommend reserving a room in the historic portion of the hotel or staying somewhere else. By night you can walk the quiet streets of this once thriving gold town, watch a play at the Fallon Theatre, or take a ghost tour of the town. Each room features a half bath and showers are shared in the hall. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the busy main street. The hotels feature a theatre, restaurant and continental breakfast.

TIP: This is perhaps the best, authentic 49er-era experience in all of Gold Country. If you don't mind the shared showers, we highly recommend staying here at least for a night.
