Desert Caves, Caverns & Mines Overview
Below you'll find information on caves that can be found in the Desert. Whether it be a cave in an ancient mountain range or long deserted ghost town mine, California has something to suit your interest. Most caves and mines hover around 60 degrees year round, making these underground attractions a great place to cool off on a warm summer day.

Mitchell Caverns are located off Interstate 40 east of Barstow and literally out in the middle of nowhere. Spectacular limestone formations include stalagmites, stalactites, helictites, lily pads, draperies, curtains and popcorn. These are the only limestone caverns in the State Park System.

Calico Ghost Town is located at the intersection of Calico and Ghost Town Roads off Interstate 15 near Yermo. These are the remnants of an actual town and silver mine abandoned many years back and now a tourist attraction. A small portion of the mine remains open to the public. If you have young kids, Calico is a really fun place to experience a day in an old western town. Many other activities include a narrow gauge railroad and gun fight reenactments by stunt men dressed in period clothing. POW!
